Book of the month – How to be a BAWSE

EN: This month’s book is one which became very dear to me, while I was reading it. I had only recently found out about this huge YouTube star, Lilly Singh (a.k.a. IISuperwomanII), and seeing how funny and relatable she is, when I heard that she wrote a book – I was already sold on it.

If you look “How to be a BAWSE” by Lilly Singh, on Amazon, this is what you will find:

How to Be a Bawse is the definitive guide to conquering life. Make no mistake, there are no shortcuts to success, personal or professional. World domination requires real effort, dedication, and determination. Just consider Lilly a personal trainer for your life—with fifty rules to get you in the game.

I’m not going to lie, it’s a long book. I was expecting something light and short, written in a funny manner. I was only half right: it is written in a funny manner. But it’s anything but short and light.

I think it was a touch of brilliant to insert certain chapters where she tells how she dealt with depression, while still managing to lift your spirits. After each depression story, which gives you an insight on her past, there is a mirroring story regarding the present, thus showing you how things evolved and got better. I guess you can say that she touches on depression, but not in a depressive way.

Also, you will be amazed how real she keeps it, and how on point are her examples. She knows you would rather watch Netflix than write an essay, and she makes you hold yourself accountable and ask yourself “Ok, if this total stranger knows I’d rather eat ice-cream and be a sock all day, why don’t I prove her wrong? Why don’t I prove everyone wrong?”.

I can’t summarize all the useful advice and all the lessons I’ve learned, because I would probably need to rewrite the whole book. I’ll add below some quotes I saved, for those moments when I need a “pick me up and a kick in the ass”.

Another awesome feature was that, at the end of each chapter, there is a “self-evaluation” section. No, it’s not a test at the end of each chapter, that would be inhumane. It’s a section where you can reflect on the chapter you’ve just read, and applying that lesson to your life, by identifying the problems, the steps, the things you can change, etc.

I don’t remember any self-help book having such a practical form. It truly made me think, and spend more time introspecting than I would by reading some other book.

And, if you want to read some highlights (it seemed like highlights to me), here they are:

“You have to seek out situations that make you uncomfortable and then throw yourself into them.”

“Productivity over pride. Elevation over ego.”

“Going in circles will never get you anywhere (unless you’re the Earth, in which case you’re alllriighhhttt).”

“Ask questions that align with your priorities and ignore all the other noise.”

“If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not taking any steps toward accomplishing a goal.”

“No mistake is too big or too small to apologize for, and no ego should be too big to make that apology.”

“If you don’t love yourself, you’re probably not the happiest version of yourself, and thus you’re unable to love someone to the best of your ability.”

“The universe might respect the law of attraction, but it respects a good hustle even more.”

“Escalators exist in every industry, but a Bawse will always take the stairs and prioritize the longevity of their career.”

“You know that being a Bawse entails climbing a ladder, or several ladders. When you reach the top, it’s important to recognize that you’re never truly at the top.”

Daca ai curiozitatea sa cauti “How to be a BAWSE”, de Lilly Singh, pe Amazon, o sa gasesti asta:

“How to be a BAWSE” (“Cum sa fii un SHEF”) este clar un ghid despre cum sa iesi triumfator in viata.

« Exista lifturi in orice industrie, dar o SHEFA va sti intotdeauna sa aleaga scarile, prioritizand longevitatea carierei sale. »

Cand ajungi in varf, este foarte important sa recunosti ca nu esti niciodata, cu adevarat, in varf. »
